Myofascial Release Therapy

 

Myofascial Release Therapy is a manual treatment that tackles musculoskeletal immobility and chronic pain by releasing fascial adhesion and scar tissue. This makes it an appropriate treatment for many different conditions, including as an aid to post-surgical recovery.

The term combines “myo”, meaning muscle, with “fascial”, which refers to the body’s fascia system. Fascia is a sheath-like connective tissue surrounding all muscles and their attached tendons and ligaments. These connective tissues can become restricted by adhesion, fibrosis or scar tissue due to emotional stressors, overuse, trauma, infection, inactivity or long-term posture issues, often resulting in pain, muscle tension, and corresponding diminished blood flow.

Myofascial Release Therapy effectively releases tension deep in the body through the use of soft tissue manipulation in conjunction with moderate pressure across the affected area, while the patient remains completely relaxed and passive throughout.
